According to the California Capitol Museum:
“The Golden State” has long been a popular description for California. It was made the official State Nickname in 1968. The name refers to many things, the Gold Rush being the most obvious reference. The state’s springtime poppy fields and summer’s golden hillsides are other golden aspects of beautiful California.
In the newspaper article, Soubriquiets of States, from the Washington Time’s Newspaper in 1901: “California is The Golden State and Eldorado the literal Spanish for The Golden Region.”
